When configuring Footfall and Visitor data, what catchments should one use?

As a general rule, when trying to measure the number of passersby, one should configure the footfall count in a 50m "max" catchment. This configuration looks for a hexagon cell whose centroid is within 50m of the locations with the highest value. The 50m radius is needed to ensure finding a cell that covers the nearest street. Footfall counts should never be configured with a weighted average catchment.

The footfall index can measure activity in the precise micro location. For the index to be meaningful, precise coordinates for the store entrance must be set. We recommend to configure a weighted mean catchment with a 30m radius.

Visitors can be aggregated more flexibly:

  • Small walk/radius to measure the number of people staying in the immediate vicinity of the location
  • Summed up in zones to measure visitation to fixed polygons (malls, train stations etc.)
  • Larger car/transit catchments to measure the daytime population in the larger area.
When aggregating visitors one can evaluate the overall visitor count and also the cannibalized counts to account for competitors.
